2012
A challenging, eventful, and rewarding year.

At work, we released Go 1. I couldn’t be more proud of what we acheived with the help of our amazing community. I was also honored to sit beside Ken on a panel at Google I/O, and wrote what I think is my best talk to date.

It has been a year of much travelling. I moved from one house into two separated by nearly 800 kilometres, and flew twice a week on average.

I spent a quarter of the year overseas on trips to the United States, Europe and Asia. Of everywhere I visited, I thoroughly enjoyed New York (Louis CK at the Comedy Store, Sleep No More, friends and family), Amsterdam (art, bikes), and Zurich (more art and friends).

Speaking inside a defunct nuclear reactor hall in Stockholm was pretty special, too. :–)

While most of that travel was for work, I was also lucky enough to visit Borneo with my family in November. I can particularly recommend Bako National Park and the village of Pa'Lungan, both in Sarawak.

I renewed my love for cycling.

For the first time since starting at Google, I found the time to work on music again. Among other things, my housemate and I have been collaborating on some bass music. I also started putting together a modular synthesizer, which is way too much fun.

The animals had a good year, too.
My rabbit Arnie was joined by a lady rabbit named Amelia, with whom he had no less than 12 babies. We kept two of them, and gave one to a friend. (The rest went to the pet shop or were fed to a snake.)

We also adopted a rabbit that just showed up on our property one day.

We took on 13 chickens and 6 ducks, although now we only have 12 and 3 respectively due to the aforementioned snake.

Of course, we bred more guinea pigs. This is Percy, one of our more spectacular boars.

I am truly thankful to the amazing people that I seem to find everywhere around me. You have made me improbably happy. I hope to see you again soon.

Happy New Year.
